President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Thursday re-appointed Zimbabwe Electoral Commission chairperson Justice Priscilla Chigumba to her post for another six years.

In a letter to Chigumba, chief secretary to the President and Cabinet Martin Rushwaya said her re-appointment is with effect from February 1, 2024.

“I am pleased to announce that His Excellency the President of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa has in terms of section 238 (5) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe Act 2023, reappointed you as the chair of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission for a period of six years with effect from 1 February 2024,” wrote Rushwaya.

Chigumba began her career in 1994 when she joined a private law firm in 1994 after graduating from university.

She practiced as a lawyer for six years before joining PG Industries as assistant company secretary. She later formed her own law firm before joining the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs Ministry as a magistrate in 2004.

Chigumba served as a resident magistrate and provincial magistrate before being seconded to work as a senior professional research assistant in the Office of the Chief Justice.

She was sworn in as Justice of the High Court on 20 December 2012 and in 2018 she was appointed ZEC chair in 2018, succeding Justice Rita Makarau.
