Harare, (New Ziana) – Zimbabwe is expected to receive significant rainfall from Tuesday, with thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds likely in several parts of the country, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has warned.
The MSD said rainfall of more than 30 millimetres was expected between Tuesday and Thursday, and urged the public, particularly farmers and vulnerable communities, to take precautions against weather-related hazards.
The department said the weather conditions would begin changing on Tuesday, September 29, as cool, moist south-easterly winds interact with a mid-level atmospheric system.
“Rain, occasionally accompanied by thunder, lightning and strong winds, will affect parts of Masvingo from Tuesday morning before spreading to other provinces later in the day. From Wednesday 30, cloudy and cool conditions are expected, with rain likely in provinces such as Masvingo, Matabeleland South and the southern parts of Manicaland. At the same time, thunderstorms remain possible in other areas.
“The public should watch out for lightning strikes and flash flooding in low-lying areas and urban centres. The strong winds can damage crops and structures,” said the MSD.
The weather agency said the anticipated rainfall could also affect the quality of harvested grain, as increased moisture creates conditions favourable for fungal diseases.
The MSD advised the public to remain alert to lightning and strong winds, while farmers were urged to take measures to protect crops and property.
It also warned against seeking shelter under trees or near tall poles and other elevated objects during thunderstorms.
“When lightning flashes, people should seek shelter inside a house or building and avoid sailing during a storm,” the MSD said.
The department urged members of the public to follow its daily weather updates and guidance issued by the Department of Civil Protection throughout the period.
