Harare, (New Ziana) – The Harare Residents Trust (HRT) has warned that the worsening water situation in the capital is placing an “unbearable burden” on households, particularly among vulnerable groups.

In a statement, the residents’ advocacy group said the persistent lack of reliable water supplies is disrupting everyday life across the city, leaving many struggling to meet basic needs.

“The ongoing crisis is severely affecting daily life, with women, children and the elderly bearing the brunt,” the HRT said, highlighting the disproportionate impact on already disadvantaged communities.

The organization painted a grim picture of the human cost behind the shortages, noting that access to water has become a daily struggle for many families.

“Every day, young girls are forced to miss school to fetch water. Mothers spend countless hours in queues instead of providing for their families. The elderly, who deserve dignity and care, are left struggling to access this basic human necessity,” it said.

According to the HRT, the crisis has affected most suburbs in Harare and surrounding areas, with some residents going for days or even weeks without running water. As a result, many have been forced to turn to boreholes and other alternative sources, some of which pose serious health risks.

The trust warned that reliance on unsafe water sources could expose communities to waterborne diseases, further compounding the already dire situation.

It called on authorities to urgently intervene and ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply system across the city.

“There is an urgent need for authorities to act decisively and guarantee consistent access to safe water for all residents,” it said.

The HRT underscored growing frustration among residents as the crisis continues with no immediate relief in sight, raising concerns over public health, livelihoods, and the overall quality of life in the capital.
