Residents owe Kwekwe city over ZW$1.5 billion

Share

Kwekwe (New Ziana) – Kwekwe residents and businesses owe the city council a whopping ZW$1.5 billion, mainly in unpaid rates and other municipal charges, causing it to also accumulate huge debts to key suppliers.

The council owes over ZW$520 million to several suppliers, top among them the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company, which is owed ZW$396 million.

Other major creditors are the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority, the Local Authority Pension Fund and the Zimbabwe National Water Authority.

Most local government authorities are experiencing high defaults in rates payment by residents, both individual and corporate, due to the challenging economic situation in the country.

But residents, in part, would also be protesting lack of service delivery by the local authorities by withholding payment for municipal rates.
