RUTENGA Growth Point in Mwenezi District has been selected as the host venue for Zimbabwe’s 47th Independence Celebrations and the 2027 Children’s Party. This development is expected to usher in significant infrastructure upgrades and economic opportunities for the district.
The announcement was made during a Post-Cabinet Media Briefing by the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Zhemu Soda, who said the decision aligns with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s policy of bringing major national events to remote and previously underserved communities.
The selection of Rutenga continues the government’s decentralisation drive, which has seen Independence celebrations rotate across the country’s provinces. The initiative aims to ensure that the benefits associated with hosting national events are shared throughout Zimbabwe while accelerating development in areas that have historically been underdeveloped.
For Mwenezi District, the hosting rights represent more than just a national honour. Previous host communities have benefited from extensive investments in roads, public facilities, sporting infrastructure, health services, water systems, and other key projects undertaken in preparation for the celebrations. Similar developments are expected to take shape in and around Rutenga ahead of April 2027.
Located along the strategic Masvingo-Beitbridge corridor, Rutenga serves as an important commercial and transport hub for southern Zimbabwe. Local businesses and residents are optimistic that the event will attract investment, create employment opportunities, and stimulate economic activity both during the preparations and beyond the celebrations themselves.
The government has increasingly positioned Independence commemorations as vehicles for rural development, ensuring that host communities are left with lasting infrastructure and improved public services long after the national festivities have concluded.
The announcement has already generated excitement across Masvingo Province, with many viewing the decision as recognition of the district’s potential and as an opportunity to unlock new avenues for growth and development. As the nation prepares for future commemorations, all eyes will gradually turn to Rutenga, where plans are expected to gather momentum in the coming months.
