Harare, (New Ziana) – The Southern African Development Community (SADC) expressed confidence in Tanzania’s readiness to conduct peaceful and credible elections on Wednesday to elect a new president, members of parliament and local government officials.
In a statement, SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation Chairperson and President of Malawi, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, said the regional bloc fully supports Tanzania’s electoral process and remains committed to promoting democracy and good governance across the region.
“Fellow Members of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the people of the United Republic of Tanzania will go to the polls tomorrow, 29 October 2025 to elect the President, Members of Parliament and Councillors in line with the country’s Constitution and laws governing elections.
“At the invitation of the United Republic of Tanzania, as a SADC Member State, SADC has deployed its Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) to the United Republic of Tanzania under the leadership of The Right Honourable Richard Msowoya, former Speaker of Parliament of the Republic of Malawi, to observe the country’s pre-election phase, polling day and the post-election processes, in line with the relevant provisions of the revised SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections (2021),” said Mutharika.
He noted that Tanzania has a long-standing tradition of peace and stability and expressed confidence that during and after these elections, the United Republic of Tanzania will maintain its reputation as a peaceful nation that upholds democratic principles.
He urged eligible voters to turn out in large numbers and freely exercise their democratic right, noting that their participation is vital to shaping the country’s continued development.
Mutharika also appealed to political leaders and their supporters to maintain peace, respect the rule of law, and honour the will of the people, using legal channels to resolve any disputes that may arise.
“SADC reaffirms its unwavering support for the United Republic of Tanzania on election day and throughout the post-election period. Through SEOM, SADC’s mission remains to facilitate a peaceful, credible and inclusive electoral process,” he said.
The SADC Chairperson concluded by wishing the people of Tanzania successful elections that deepen democracy, strengthen national unity, and pave the way for greater prosperity.
