Harare (New Ziana) – Civil servants have been awarded a 20 percent salary increment backdated to January, while the US dollar component of their salaries has been increased to $175.

Civil Servants, who have been agitating for a salary increment, were already getting a USD 75 Covid-19 allowance.

In a statement, Finance and Economic Development Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube said President Emerson Mnangagwa had directed the immediate implementation of the increment.

“A 20 percent increase in the Zimbabwe dollar salary component, backdated to 1 January 2022, will be implemented across the board,” he said.

“A hundred US dollar per month in hard currency to be paid to every civil servant with effect from the first of March 2022. This will be done through the conversion of a corresponding Zimbabwe dollar salary amount into hard currency bringing the foreign currency amount to USD 175.

“The introduction of an advancement award, which recognizes seniority for differentiation within the same grade to be implemented across the entire Civil service.”

Ncube also announced a raft of non monetary benefits including construction of houses for the government workers, while teachers will now benefit from transport facilities and also be allowed to import vehicles duty free, but on condition that they do not dispose them within a period of three years.

He said other non-monetary benefits will include:”Payment of school fees for up to three biological children per teaching family with an upper limit of ZWL20 000 per child per term to be paid directly to the school.”
