Schools get Constitution in braille format and sign language discs

Harare (New Ziana)-The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education on Wednesday received copies of the Constitution in braille format and sign language discs from the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs for onward transmission to schools.

In an acceptance speech, Primary and Secondary Education permanent secretary Tumisang Thabela said the copies of the Constitution in braille, would ensure access to knowledge and information on the supreme law of the country by learners living with disabilities.

“It is critical that everyone including learners become aware of the Constitution and understand their constitutional rights and values as citizens and function productively and efficiently in their communities as well as villages of origin,” she said.

The donation of 300 copies of the Constitution in the summarised version in braille format, 10 copies of the full version of the Constitution in braille, 10 discs of the Constitution in sign Language will be distributed to schools in the country’s ten provinces.

Thabela said the availability of copies of the Constitution would enhance human rights education in schools and ensure that it became an integral part of everyday school life/

“Understanding the Constitution will inculcate traits of Hunhuism among our learners from a tender age,” she said.

She said the donation also complemented the Ministry`s indefatigable efforts in promoting inclusivity which is one of the pillars of the Competence Based Curriculum.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, director of Constitutional and Parliamentary Affairs, Charles Manhiri said the donation would ensure that the country’s Constitution was taught in schools.
