THE Government has over the past years been providing supplementary food to
children in its primary and secondary schools, especially in rural and remote
communities so that no child would attend lessons on an empty stomach.
The measure was also extended to urban primary schools as well as boarding
schools that accommodate day scholars.
The Government has been supplying the schools with grain and relish, mainly in the
form of beans and soya chunks.
This year, schools have been implored to join and embrace the Pfumvudza scheme
so that they also have their own source of grain they will use to supplement the
Government’s share.
The call was received whole heartedly by Mashonaland Central Provincial Education
Director, Dr. Themba Mangwiro, who said the initiative is very important.
He called on all schools across the province to start preparations for their Pfumvudza
plots.
“Having own grain will save them, they will only look for relish.”
Dr Mangwiro said almost all primary schools in the province are rolling out the
feeding scheme.
“We are, however, encouraging all schools to join the programme and to feed their
children,” he added.
The schools feeding programme is mainly alive in primary schools and a few
secondary schools.
“We, however, encourage all our schools to feed their children including boarding
schools that accommodate day scholars.”
