GWERU – The inaugural Sheasham FC Social Soccer Tournament is a resounding success after drawing an impressive 36 social clubs from across the city in its first edition.
The tournament, which runs for three weeks starting February 15 at Chaplin High School, will also serve as a platform for an anti-drug and substance abuse campaign.
As part of Sheasham FC’s commitment to giving back to the community, the tournament aims to promote social cohesion, raise awareness about the dangers of drug and substance abuse, and provide a platform for networking and relationship-building.
Given the overwhelming response, the tournament is set to become a key annual event on the local sports calendar.
Sheasham FC board member for marketing, Munyaradzi Mafaza, said the tournament was established as a way of ploughing back into the community.
He was satisfied with the enthusiastic participation of social soccer clubs.
“The main goal of this tournament is to give back to the community that has stood by us over the years. We started as a social soccer club, but we managed to grow and eventually progressed to the Premier Soccer League,” Mafaza said.
With people from different backgrounds expected to attend, the event will provide opportunities for networking and creating linkages.
Sheasham FC will also use the tournament to mobilise support and attract potential partners.
Teams have been drawn into eight groups, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the next stage.
Winning teams will receive kits, trophies, and balls, among other prizes.
Sheasham FC currently plays in the Central Region Soccer League and recently hired coach Prince Matore.
