In a heart rending incident that has left Inyathi villagers in shock, a Grade One learner was raped and found dead in bushy area in Longwe village after she had gone missing from school.
The little girl’s body was found with a blood-stained stone beside her indicating that she had been bludgeoned to death. She had been missing from school.
It is said that on October 21, Nokukhanya Mthethwa, who was doing Grade One at Longwe Primary School asked to visit the toilet from her teacher. She never returned to the classroom and the teacher thought that she had decided to go home.
However when she did not return home, her mother went to enquire from the school authorities on her daughter’s whereabouts but was told that she had left school before break time. After failing to locate her daughter, the mother filled a report with the police three days later at ZRP Kenilworth base, Inyathi.
“The villagers of Longwe village, Kenilworth, Inyathi joined in the search for the missing child. On 27 October 2022 at around 10am, the body of Nokukhanya Mthethwa was found in a bushy area at Longwe village, Inyathi by the searching villagers. A Police report was made and the scene was attended,” said Matebeleland Police Spokesperson Inspector Glory Banda.
A day after the body was found, police revisited the scene and gathered information which led to the arrest of the alleged perpetrator.
“The accused person stated that he saw the deceased coming out through the school fence using an illegal exit and he assaulted her with a stone several times. When he noticed that the juvenile was unconscious, he raped her once without protection and fled the scene.”
Police have appealed to the public to respect human life and to desist from doing such heinous acts.
