MASVINGO United Football Club, affectionately known as Una Una, has received
US$2 000 from the Masvingo City Council for the 2022-23 Eastern Region Division One
soccer league.
According to minutes of the Finance and General Purposes Committee the club had sought
assistance for the payment of affiliation fees of US$2 000 and signing on fees of US$7 000.
The City Fathers as part of the council's assistance to the club waived the payment of lease
for rentals of Mucheke Stadium, which the team uses as its home ground during the team’s
home matches for the soccer league season.
“The Committee considered the application of Masvingo United Football Club for assistance
for the 2022-3 Premier League Soccer Season. It was reported that the Club was requesting
assistance towards the payment of affiliation fees amounting to US$2 000 and Signing on
Fees of US$7 000. The Committee approved the payment of the affiliation fees amounting to
US$2 000 for Masvingo United Football Club.
The Committee explored allocating the club space from which it could operate a shop to
augment its income as a long-term measure of reducing the burden on the local authority. The
Committee also approved the waiver of stadium rentals fees for the team when it is having
home matches,” reads part of the minutes.
The local authority also granted a request by another Masvingo-based team, Wangu Mazodze
Football Club, to use Mucheke Stadium for training. It was reported that the training sessions
would be held twice a week for two hours, for a period of one year.
Meanwhile, the mayor, Councillor Collen Maboke, has urged the local authority to engage
members of the business community to consider helping the local authority in sprucing up
Mamutse Stadium, also in Mucheke.
Maboke said he had in mind a partnership like what the Harare City Council and Sakunda
Holdings tried to undertake to help them turn the ground into a proper stadium and decongest
the Mucheke Stadium, which happens to be the only stadium in the city.
