Indeed, Charity begins at home. Eighteen learners from Sir Humphrey Gibbs in Number 2, Hwange
have received school uniforms and stationery from a Hwange philanthropist, Khethiwe Masendo and
her diaspora friends Mr and Mrs Omen Ndlovu.
The learners- nine boys and nine girls are from the school’s special class. They received a complete
set of a new uniform, shoes, branded bags as well as pens for the new term in the true spirit of
Ubuntu and mantra ‘nyika inovakwa nevene vayo’.
In handing over the donation, Musendo said the gesture was as result of the love that she has for Sir
Humphrey Gibbs School and what it was doing for these children as well as her appreciation of the
people of Hwange as whole.
“Sir Humphrey Gibbs is part of me. I learnt here in 1979 and 1980 and it was touching for me to see
these special children growing up without the adequate needs. For me, it is ploughing back to the
community, because I grew up here.
“This is just the beginning, we are hoping to do more for the community of Hwange,” she said.
Omen Ndlovu echoed similar sentiments adding that he loved children and is particularly moved by
the plight of those who need special care hence their donation. He was also paying back to the
community that helped raise him.
“As a human being, what has pushed me is my purpose in life. Apart from being from this
community, I have often asked myself of what I can do to help improve other people and add value.
“I was a teacher here in Hwange in my formative years, joined the community of Hwange, joined the
Lion’s Club and have been supporting the community of Hwange,” he said.
Ndlovu has been in Australia for the past 33 years and hopes to make Hwange a better place for
children.
“I have been away for 33 years but still have a connection with children of Hwange community. I
intend to have more programmes for children in Hwange such as vision screening for the eyes. I
could even partner with Lions Club international to help these children,” said Ndlovu.
Sir Humphrey Gibbs School Development Committee Vice Chair Boniface Siduli, on behalf of the
parents and school, said he was moved by the gesture. He said the donation will help the young
children achieve their dreams despite their backgrounds.
“We really appreciate the kind gestures from the Khethiwe Musendo and the Ndlovu family, if only
we could get more people with such good hearts to support our school. We could be far away in
terms of development. The school needs to equip the learners with computer literacy, and it is in
this regard that we want more people to chip in supporting the school,” he said.
