Six hundred new schools built

Harare,  (New Ziana) – The government and various stakeholders has built 600 new schools countrywide in a development expected to address the deficit of learning infrastructure, a Cabinet Minister has said.

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerai Moyo told Parliament the new schools were built between 2022 and 2025. “We carried out a study in 2022 and the findings of the study were that we had a deficit of 3 000, but now I can happily inform this House that we have constructed more than 600 schools. Since 2022 until now in 2025, we have built more than 600 schools. This year, we are targeting to build not less than 200 schools in 2025,” he said.

He said the new schools were built by the Government and various stakeholders, including churches, and Members of Parliament. “When I say school construction, I am not only just referring to schools that are built by the Government because we are the regulator. I need to clarify this to Hon. Members. All schools that are built by Government, individuals, corporates or by organizations like the churches are our schools.

“I wish to inform this House that one organisation, the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, has built seven schools this year. We are going to commission Chabwino Primary School in two weeks’ time and that school was built by the church,” he said.

He added: “I know individual Honorable Members who have built more than 10 schools. The Church of Johane Marange is building more than eight schools this year.” Moyo said the Government has also received funding from NBS (National Building Society) and has started the construction of 25 schools.

“We also have partners in the form of OPEC funding for International Development. They have pledged the first initial funding of US$20 million, which we expect to get this month. We also have organizations like the Algerian Government. So, we are busy constructing schools,” he said.
