KWEKWE — Nearly 90 homesteads in Zimende and Khatshana villages in Kwekwe District are set to benefit from improved access to water following the commissioning of a US$12,000 solar-powered borehole by Delta Corporation Limited.

The borehole, handed over on September 7, is expected to serve approximately 45 households in each of the two communities under Chief Malisa.

Delta Chief Executive Officer Mathlogonolo Valela, who officially handed over the facility, said the intervention was aimed at addressing a basic need while promoting sustainable community development.

“Water is not simply a basic service; it is an essential foundation for health, dignity and community development,” Valela said.

He said Delta remains committed to supporting communities through projects that address practical needs and deliver lasting benefits.

The use of solar energy is expected to reduce dependence on conventional electricity and help ensure the continued operation of the water facility.

Valela said the project forms part of Delta’s broader water stewardship and sustainable community development initiatives, which include interventions in water, health, education, environmental responsibility, and community empowerment.

He urged villagers to take ownership of the infrastructure and ensure it was protected and maintained.

“The handover does not mark the end of this project. It marks the beginning of community ownership and stewardship,” he said.

Valela said the facility’s lasting impact will depend on its proper maintenance and equitable use by the beneficiary communities.

The handover ceremony was attended by community members, traditional leaders and other local representatives.

Delta also expressed appreciation to Chief Malisa, traditional leaders, community representatives, and technical partners who contributed to the completion of the project.

The development is expected to ease the burden faced by families in the two villages when accessing water, while providing a more sustainable source for the communities.

“We really thank Team Delta for the borehole, as we were facing serious water challenges here. I hope to look after the borehole for our benefit,” said a local villager.
