SHURUGWI – In a fusion of corporate duty and communal gratitude, the River Valley Group turned solemnity of Heroes Day into a celebration of hope, delivering a massive wave of support to the families of fallen liberators at the Tongogara Heroes Acre in Shurugwi.
The diversified conglomerate, led by Ambassador Smelly Dube, spearheaded the Midlands Province commemorations by providing a comprehensive logistics package and direct humanitarian aid to dozens of widows and local leaders.
The gesture fell in line with His Excellency President Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa’s call at the main event in Harare that sons and daughters of the soil who laid down their lives for Zimbabwe to be free must be revered.
Beyond the logistical backbone of the event—which included the provision of specialized catering, professional tenting, and a high-end public address system—the Group distributed grocery hampers and commemorative apparel to the widows of liberation war fighters as well as the national dress fabric.For many of the recipients, the gesture represented more than just material aid; it was a visible sign that their husbands and wives’ sacrifices remain etched in the nation’s memory.
Furthering their support for the district’s infrastructure and leadership, the company donated over 1,000 litres of fuel to traditional Chiefs, Government departments, and security services to ensure the smooth co-ordination of the day’s activities.
Ambassador Professor Smelly Dube, CEO of the River Valley Group, described the initiative as a “non-negotiable” debt of gratitude.
“We are only playing our national duty by making this financial and material commitment,” Ambassador Dube said during the ceremony. “We want to honor those who fought for our freedom. As a company rooted in these communities, especially here in Shurugwi where we conduct our mining and land development, we are honored to join hands with the nation to say ‘thank you’.”
The sentiment of profound appreciation was shared by Group Chairman, Engineer Dr. Mncedisi Dube. In a statement released during the event, he linked the company’s commercial success directly to the peace secured by the country’s veterans and jealously guarded by our Defence Forces.
“The River Valley Group owes its very existence to the sacrifices made by both our living and fallen heroes,” Eng Dube stated. “This annual gesture is our humble way of showing appreciation for the foundation they laid for our prosperity. As His Excellency President Mnangagwa always says, our founding Fathers fought so that we can control our natural resources judiciously for Economic growth as well as the benefit of all people.”
The Shurugwi commemorations, typically marked by somber reflection, were buoyed this year by the Group’s outreach. For the widows in attendance, the distribution of flowers and food hampers served as a reminder that the private sector recognizes the human cost of the liberation struggle.
