MUTARE – A 44-year-old self-proclaimed spiritual healer has been sentenced to 18 years in prison by the Mutare Regional Magistrates Court after being convicted of rape.
The case has highlighted the alarming ways in which some individuals exploit people’s faith and desperation under the guise of spiritual or healing practices.
The conviction stems from an incident in Dangamvura, Mutare, involving a 46-year-old complainant who sought help from the accused while suffering from severe menstrual bleeding.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the victim approached the “prophet” for assistance in her condition, initially receiving treatment that involved herbal remedies.
“However, after the initial consultation, the accused claimed that evil spirits were tormenting her, suggesting that further ‘treatment’ was necessary. On April 16, 2024, he took the complainant to a river near Gimboki under the pretence of conducting a healing ritual. Tragically, it was during this visit that he raped her, with the complainant believing the act was part of the healing process,” stated the NPA
The severity of the assault only came to light when the victim’s husband discovered what had happened. Distressed and outraged, he encouraged her to report the incident to the police. Following the report, authorities acted swiftly, leading to the arrest of the accused.
The NPA described this case as a stark example of how predators exploit the vulnerabilities of individuals, especially those seeking help through faith or spirituality.
