‎Harare, (New Ziana) -The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) Board of Commissioners has announced the appointment of Allen Mavunga as the new Director General, effective June 1 this year.

‎In a statement, SRC board chairman Nathaniel Madzivanyika said the appointment was made with the approval of the Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Lieutenant General (Retired) Anselem Sanyatwe, in terms of Section 24 of the Sports and Recreation Act.

‎”The Board of Commissioners of the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) advises that it has, with the approval of the Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Minister, Lt Gen (Rtd) Ambassador. A.N Sanyatwe, appointed Mr Allen Takudzwa Mavunga as Director General of the SRC. The appointment, which is in terms of Section 24 of the Sports and Recreation Act (Chapter 25:15], is with effect from the 1st of June 2026,” he said.

Madzivanyika said ‎Mavunga brings with him extensive experience drawn from both the corporate and sports sectors, having held senior leadership positions in multinational sports administration, lotteries and gaming, national disaster relief, and sports infrastructure development.

‎He said Mavunga holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, United States of America, as well as a Diploma in Olympic Sports Management from the International Olympic Committee.

‎A former athlete who represented Zimbabwe at regional competitions, Mavunga has also served in directorship roles in basketball and baseball in the United States, further strengthening his credentials in sports administration and governance.

‎Madzivanyika said Mavunga’s qualifications and professional background align with the Commission’s strategic vision of commercialising and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the sports sector in the country.

‎”The Board of Commissioners congratulates Mr Mavunga on his appointment and wishes him success as he works to transform the SRC into the strategic engine of Zimbabwe’s sports economy,” he said.

He added that the appointment supports the objectives of the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) and the national vision which seeks to position sport as a key contributor to economic growth, youth empowerment and national development by 2030.
