Harare, (New Ziana) – The Sporting and Recreation Commission (SRC) has effective Monday suspended all sporting activities till further notice in line with a government directive banning gatherings to reduce a resurgence in the number of Covid-19 cases.

As part of a raft of new measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus, the government at the weekend said all gatherings, except for funerals, which are now limited to 30 people, had been banned effective June 14.

From an average of about 100 cases a week in the past two months, the country has seen a surge to around 500 cases in the past week.

The SRC said “all sporting activities and events are hereby suspended with effect from Monday, 14th June 2021 until further notice.”

“All national sports associations, clubs, gyms and related stakeholders should abide by this suspension without exception,” the sporting regulatory body said.

The SRC said it will provide guidance to individual national associations that have on-going international commitments.

Most sporting disciplines, including football – the most followed sport, had in the past two months resumed activity following a break of over a year due to Covid-19 lockdowns that restricted sport and gatherings.

Zimbabwe has to date recorded nearly 40 000 positive Covid-19 cases and 1 632 deaths since March last year.
