Harare (New Ziana)- President Emmerson Mnangagwa has granted late musician Zexie Manatsa a state-assisted funeral.
Manatsa, whose hits include Baba Tipeiwo Ndege, Musango Mune Hangaiwa, Chipo Chrioorwa and Tea Hobvu, died on Thursday after a long battle with cancer.
Deputy Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet George Charamba confirmed the honour.
“Late comrade Zexie Manatsa has been granted a state-assisted funeral by the President of Zimbabwe Dr ED Mnangagwa after some consultation with the Acting President,” he tweeted.
Manatsa, whose music career started in the 60s, has been credited with contributing immensely to Zimbabwe’s Independence through satirical and poetic music compositions as well as mentoring upcoming musicians.
He becomes the latest musician to be granted state recognition in honour of his contribution to Zimbabwe’s music industry.
His in-law, the late Oliver Mtukudzi was granted National Hero status when he died in 2019.
Manatsa’s son, Tendai is married to Mtukudzi’s daughter Selma.
