Telegraph dominates provincial media awards

Chinhoyi(The Telegraph-New Ziana) -Reporters from the Telegraph newspaper dominated the 7th edition of the Mashonaland West Zimbabwe Union of Journalists Media awards held at a local hotel on Tuesday.

Four journalists from the community newspaper came first in three categories.

A correspondent with the New Ziana publication, Farai Chikore won the Environment and Mining reporter of the year award while Paul Pindani, who recently moved to H-Metro, won the Child/ Health reporter of the year award.

Tanaka Rwatirera and Esther Shavi, both interns at the Telegraph were joint winners of the Upcoming reporter of the year award with Sharon Chikore from The Herald.

The category is mostly contested by interns on attachment.

In other categories, the Agriculture reporter of the year award was won by Regis Mhako of the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation while the runner up was James Muonwa from the Newsday.

Sports, Arts and Culture reporter of the year award was scooped by Wellington Zvoufa of The Star while the runner up was Mhako.

Muonwa won the Courts and Crime reporter of the year award while Zvoufa was the runner up.

The Photos and Visuals category was won by Tambaoga Gora from the ZBC while Nunurai Jena from the Newsday was the runner up.

Heather Charema from The Herald was the runner up for the Environment and Mining reporter of the year award and John Murwira of the H -Metro the runner up for the Child/ Health reporter of the year award.

The upcoming journalist of the year award is sponsored by veteran journalist Jena while Zimplats is the major sponsor of the annual awards.

The judges report highlighted that there were 52 entries, the highest so far in the history of the awards, which were submitted for consideration and all the stories were coded and names removed to allow for fairness in the judging process.
