Harare, (New Ziana) – In a significant diplomatic engagement, Zimbabwe is set to welcome Mr. Juan Esteban Lazo Hernández, President of the National Assembly of People’s Power and the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba, for an official visit from March 2 to March 4, 2025.
The visit underscores the enduring and historic ties between Zimbabwe and Cuba, rooted in the shared struggles for liberation and mutual solidarity.
Ms. Philisiwe Chidawanyika, Director of Public Diplomacy, Communication, and Advocacy in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, confirmed the high-profile visit, which will include a series of engagements aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and celebrating decades of cooperation.
She said upon his arrival on March 2, Mr. Lazo Hernández will be received by Zimbabwe’s Speaker of Parliament, Honourable Advocate Jacob F.N. Mudenda, starting the three-day visit.
“The Cuban leader’s itinerary includes a courtesy call on the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, His Excellency Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, as well as meetings with other senior government officials.
“These discussions are expected to explore avenues for deepening collaboration in areas of mutual interest, including trade, education, health, and cultural exchange,” she said.
A highlight of the visit will be the Cuban delegation’s tour of a Monument in honour of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, located along Fidel Castro Road in Harare.
The monument stands as a testament to the profound respect and admiration Zimbabwe holds for the late Cuban revolutionary leader, whose support for Africa’s liberation movements remains a cornerstone of the two nations’ relationship.
The delegation will also visit the African Liberation Museum, a symbolic venue that chronicles the continent’s struggle for independence and the role of international solidarity in achieving freedom.
The visit will culminate in the commemoration of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Zimbabwe and Cuba, a milestone event to be presided over by Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade,
Ms. Chidawanyika emphasized the significance of the visit, noting that it reaffirms the strong bonds of friendship and solidarity that have defined Zimbabwe-Cuba relations for decades.
