Transport Ministry urges public to report potholes

Bulawayo, (New Ziana) – The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has called on the public to always report potholes and other critical road defects, which have now been worsened by persistent rains falling across the country.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Ministry said it had established dedicated provincial hotlines to allow road users to directly alert authorities of defects requiring immediate attention on regional, primary, secondary and tertiary roads.

“The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development reaffirms its commitment to safe, reliable, and well-maintained roads for all citizens,” it said, adding that significant resources are being invested in the rehabilitation and maintenance of the road network.

The appeal comes at a time when above-normal rainfall has accelerated road degradation, with potholes, surface erosion, collapsed shoulders and blocked drainage systems being reported in both urban and rural areas.

Heavy rains have weakened road foundations, particularly on older sections of the network, increasing the risk of traffic accidents and disrupting the movement of goods and services.

The Ministry urged citizens to become active partners in road maintenance, noting that early reporting helps prevent small defects from developing into major hazards.

“The Ministry calls on the public to become active partners in road maintenance by reporting potholes and urgent defects.

“Your vigilance is invaluable. Prompt reports enable faster response, efficient resource allocation, and prevent minor issues from becoming hazards,” the Ministry said.

Road users have been advised to send clear photos or videos and provide precise locations when reporting defects to enable swift intervention by Provincial Road Engineers.

The country’s road infrastructure is critical to agriculture, mining and trade, sectors that are currently benefiting from good rains but are also vulnerable to transport disruptions.

Officials say timely repairs are essential to support economic activity and ensure road safety during the rain season.
