Treasury releases funds for wheat payments

Harare, (New Ziana) – The Grain Marketing Board (GMB) said on Saturday it had cleared outstanding arrears to wheat farmers, and already had funds in hand for this year’s crop.

GMB chief executive, Edson Badarai said the grain procurement agency had received nearly ZWG70 million from Treasury for wheat purchase, partly for upcoming deliveries, and to pay off old debts to farmers.

He applauded farmers who were owed money for their patience.

He said: “The GMB has received ZWG69 997 798 from Treasury. These funds have cleared outstanding obligations for wheat deliveries, while a total of ZWG57 102 258 went towards farmer obligations for current cereals deliveries. GMB greatly appreciates the patience and reliance of farmers as other resources are being mobilised.

“The GMB is also grateful for the support given by the Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Anxious Masuka, in facilitating the disbursement of financial resources from Treasury.”

Badarai added that the GMB remains committed to working with farmers to ensure grain self-sufficiency in the country.
