Harare (New Ziana)-President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Sunday urged citizens to ‘treat everyone as a potential COVID-19 spreader’ as the country experiences a surge in infections and deaths during the current third wave of the pandemic.

The President was addressing mourners at the burial of national hero Major General (rtd) Clever Chiramba at the Heroes Acre.

Major General (rtd) Chiramba (66) succumbed to Covid-19 complications last Sunday.

President Mnangagwa said ; “ The third wave of Covid-19 is upon us. With the kind of variants being highly transmissible; many lives have been lost within a short space of time. We should therefore not gamble with our Ives.

“As Zimbabweans we cannot afford to let our guard down. Treat everyone as a potential spreader of the virus including yourself”.

Zimbabwe is currently under level four of the national lockdown aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19.

President Mnangagwa urged the citizenry to continue observing the set down Covid-19 lockdown regulations.

“Let’s all work harder to quickly return to normalcy. The country continues to religiously observe the World Health Organization public health protocols and preventative measures the government has put in place.

“All those who have not yet received their Covid-19 vaccine doses must do so without hesitation and delay,” said President Mnangagwa.

Turning to the late National hero, President Mnangagwa described him as ‘selfless’ and ‘exemplary’.

“Let us all remain united and alive to the clandestine machinations by detractors calculated to reverse the gains of our independence.
“We should never grow tired of defending; tired of protecting; tired of safeguarding our country’s sovereignty, “ said President Mnangagwa.
