Triangle United FC finally found their footing in the 2026 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League campaign, securing a crucial 2-0 victory over newcomers Agama FC at Gibbo Stadium on Thursday.
After a difficult start to the season, all eyes were on newly appointed head coach Lloyd Chitembwe—and he delivered immediately. Super-substitute Aaron Zeka emerged as the hero of the day, netting a second-half brace to earn Triangle their first points of the campaign.
Introduced as a tactical switch, Zeka transformed the tempo of the match. His first goal broke the deadlock and visibly shook the visitors before he sealed the win with a composed second, sending the home crowd into celebration and giving the Lowveld side a much-needed lift.
Speaking after the match, AGAMA head coach Maxwell Takaendesa admitted his side lost concentration at a critical moment:
“We had a good structure before conceding, but unfortunately, we lost focus after the first goal. That changed the game. We always approach matches with the intention to win, but right now, the goals are not coming, and the results are not following.”
He remained cautiously optimistic despite the setback, emphasising the need for reflection and improvement:
“It’s part of the game. We have to go back, analyse, and correct our mistakes. The season is still long, and we will take each match as it comes. The effort is there, but we need to be more clinical and mentally stronger in key moments. If we keep working hard, the results will eventually come.”
For Chitembwe, it was a dream start at Gibbo, and he was quick to credit both his players and the supporters for the turnaround:
“I am very happy with the performance and the result. The boys showed great character and discipline. We have been working hard in a short period, and it’s encouraging to see the response on the pitch.”
He also highlighted the role played by the fans:
“The supporters were incredible today. Their energy pushed the team, especially in the second half. This is the kind of unity we need if we are to progress as a club.”
The former Caps United FC coach hinted at steady progress within the squad.
“There is still a lot of work to be done, but I am impressed with the attitude and commitment from the players. The understanding is improving, and if we continue in this direction, we will start to achieve consistent results.”
The victory lifts Triangle to 15th position with three points, breathing life into their campaign, while AGAMA remain 17th with a single point, earned earlier against Dynamos FC.
Elsewhere, Matchday 5 produced mixed results across the league. Ngezi Platinum Stars FC edged out Caps United FC 1-0 in a tightly contested top-of-the-table clash, while Scotland FC continued their fine form with a 3-2 victory away to TelOne FC.
Dynamos FC secured a narrow 1-0 win over MWOS FC, and Hardrock FC recorded the biggest win of the round with a 4-1 triumph over Herentals FC. Draws were recorded between FC Hunters and ZPC Kariba FC (1-1), as well as Bulawayo Chiefs FC and Simba Bhora FC (0-0), while Manica Diamonds FC and Chicken Inn FC also shared the spoils in a goalless encounter.
At the summit, Caps United FC remain top with 12 points despite their setback, closely followed by Scotland FC, Dynamos FC, and Ngezi Platinum Stars FC, all sitting on 11 points, keeping the title race finely balanced at this early stage of the season.
