Tsenengamu accepts ZANU-PF suspension

Harare, (New Ziana) – Zanu PF youth league political commissar Godfrey Tsenengamu said on Friday he accepted his suspension from the party for indiscipline, and will not appeal the verdict.

He and two other party youth leaders were fired, and suspended from their posts on Wednesday by the Politburo after they issued controversial public statements.

Pupurai Togarepi, the youth affairs secretary, was fired from his post outright, while his deputy Lewis Matutu and Tsenengamu were suspended for one year after the Politburo, ZANU-PF’s highest decision-making body, said it had noted with concern traits of indiscipline displayed by the trio.

Of particular concern to the Politburo were statements the trio continued to issue outside the party fora, despite being advised to do so internally in ZANU-PF first.

Earlier in the week, claiming they were speaking in their individual capacities, Matutu and Tsenengamu held a press conference and accused – without providing evidence- some of the country’s leading businessmen of corruption, including involvement in illegal foreign currency trading and gold smuggling.

The businessmen’s actions, the duo claimed, were hugely responsible for driving the economy into its current difficulties and called for urgent action to be taken against them.

Togarepi, who was not at the press conference, later backed his juniors and vowed that the party youths would continue its controversial anti-corruption crusade.

Tsenengamu, who was speaking for the first time since being suspended, said he accepted the Politburo punishment.

“I am not going to contest the decision of the suspension,” he said, but vowed not to go for re-orientation at the party’s Chitepo School of ideology as ordered by the Politburo.

“Like I said, I am not going to appeal but I will not attend the Chitepo School of Ideology.”

Tsenengamu’s colleague, Matutu, was conspicuously absent from Friday’s press conference which the duo had jointly called.
