CHAKARI – A two-year-old boy drowned in a well in Chakari recently, after he was left
unattended by his grandfather.
Mashonaland West ZRP spokesperson, Inspector Margret Chitove, confirmed the incident that
occurred on 12 March at around 12pm.
The 23-year-old mother of the boy left him under the care of his grandfather, who is 70 years
old.
In the absence of the mother, the grandfather went to the field leaving the toddler without a
guardian.
“At 1200 hours after the mother had gone out, the grandfather went to the field. After some
minutes the boy followed his grandfather. On the way, he fell into the 15 metre deep well near
the kitchen and drowned.
“When the grandfather returned he found the baby in the well and he got assistance from another
villager to retrieve him but he was already dead.”
Recent statistics have shown that many children are drowning in unprotected wells and the
authorities have called for regulatory bodies to control all unprotected wells.
Inspector Chitove also urged the authorities responsible for the water bodies to monitor these
wells as this has resulted in unfortunate incidents.
The police appealed to the parents and guardians to take care of their minors.
“We appeal to the parents and guardians to take care of their minors, as it is the sole
responsibility of a parent or guardian to take care of a child and ensure that they are safe at all
cost.
“The water bodies must always be secured so that we save our children.”
