MUTARE – The Afro-fusion outfit Vibrant Band, predominantly composed of female musicians, is buzzing with excitement after clinching top spot at the Chibuku Road to Fame provincial contest held at Mandel Leisure Centre last Saturday.

The victory not only marks a significant milestone for the band but also sets the stage for their participation in the national finals in Harare on November 9.

With a line-up of four talented women and three men, Vibrant Band showcased an impressive performance that outshone six other competing groups from Mutare, Nyanga, Mutasa, and Chipinge. The competition was fierce, but the band’s unique sound and stage presence ultimately secured them the coveted prize.

In recognition of their achievement, Vibrant Band walked away with a cash prize of US$2,500. The first runners-up, Mutare Super Stars, received US$1,500, while the traditional ASG Band took home US$1,000 for their third-place finish.

The competition was a testament to the vibrant musical talent present in the region, with each group performing passionately and energetically.

Charllote Chibi, the band’s charismatic lead vocalist, pianist, and congas and marimba player, said they were excited about their victory.

“We are thrilled to be crowned winners. It was not an easy contest as all groups were well-prepared. This was our first-ever competition as a group, and we are glad to have managed to keep our heads above water and conquer. It was tough,” Chibi remarked.

With their eyes set firmly on the national finals, Vibrant Band is now focused on refining their performance.

“We know it will not be easy. We have a lot of polishing to do before traveling to Harare. We know what we are capable of doing, and we are going there not just to add to the numbers, but to prove our mettle,” she added.

The upcoming national finals will see Vibrant Band facing off against other provincial winners, making it a highly competitive environment. The band is determined to showcase their unique Afro-fusion style, which blends traditional rhythms with contemporary sounds, and hopes to leave a lasting impression on both the judges and the audience.

Vibrant Band’s victory at the provincial contest is a significant achievement that highlights the growing presence of female musicians in the industry. Their journey to the national finals is not just about competition; it’s about celebrating their talent, hard work, and the vibrant culture of Zimbabwean music.
