Harare, (New Ziana) – World Council of Churches (WCC) General Secretary, Reverend Jerry Pillay has underscored the Church’s responsibility to champion peace, social cohesion, justice and sustainable development, saying faith communities must remain actively engaged in addressing national and global challenges.
Pillay made the remarks after paying a courtesy call on President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House in Harare on Thursday.
He said his meeting with President Mnangagwa focused on several issues, including climate change, women’s empowerment, youth employment and the welfare of migrants.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, Pillay said the Church should continue fostering unity and hope, while working collaboratively with governments to improve people’s lives.
“We had a wonderful briefing with President Mnangagwa as we continue to meet with church and community leaders with our ecumenical delegation. As WCC, our prophetic responsibility is to promote peace, social cohesion, justice, and sustainable development. The church cannot retreat into private spirituality, hence the need for it to work closely with the Government.
“I am here because I know that the churches in Zimbabwe are carrying a heavy burden – not only for the life of the church, but for the life of the nation,” he said.
