GWERU- A woman believed to be from Bulawayo, allegedly threw herself under a moving haulage truck at the intersection of Lobengula Avenue and Eight Street in Gweru’s Central Business District.
The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death, with efforts underway to identify her and notify her relatives.
Police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the accident, which occurred on July 9 at around 2pm along the Harare-Bulawayo Road, near the Glow Petroleum Service Station.
Insp. Mahoko said Christopher Malunga (58) of Kuwadzana in Harare was driving a haulage truck along Lobengula Street, Gweru.
“As Malunga got to the service station, it is alleged that the woman threw herself under the truck, in a suspected suicide and was run over by the rear wheels,” he said.
The woman died on the spot.
Police attended the scene, and the body was taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting postmortem.
“The woman did not have identification particulars on her.”
Insp. Mahoko said those missing a female relative should approach Gweru Traffic for identification.
According to an eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity, the woman seemed depressed as she was crying.
She asked the woman what she was doing as she stood in the road.
“I asked her if she wanted to kill herself, and I advised her to go home and fix whatever problems she had with her family, as she had indicated that there was animosity.
“I told her that she should be strong and ignore negativity from people, as they will always say what they want. I also told her that she had a lot to live for,” said the eyewitness.
She said the woman told her that she had two children aged 14 and 12.
The woman, according to the eyewitness, was hallucinating as she was saying she was seeing her boyfriend named Percy, who she believed wanted to kill her.
Other eyewitnesses said the woman was also concerned about a sex tape which her boyfriend Percy, had allegedly put on social media.
