Harare (New Ziana) –Zimbabwe on Thursday joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Cancer Day with a strong message on awareness, prevention, and treatment of the disease.

Hundreds of people gathered at Chikangwe Stadium in Karoi, Mashonaland West province, to commemorate the event, held under the theme “United by Unique.”

Addressing the guests, Health and Child Care Minister Douglas Mombeshora underscored the individualised journey of cancer patients while emphasizing the need for collective action to combat the disease.

The commemorations attracted community members, health professionals, and key stakeholders committed to fighting cancer through early detection, improved healthcare access, and awareness initiatives.

Mombeshora highlighted the devastating impact of cancer on individuals, families, and communities, describing it as a major public health challenge requiring urgent intervention.

“Each diagnosis, treatment plan, and experience is unique, yet it is through these unique experiences that we find common ground, shared understanding, and an unbreakable bond,” he said.

He acknowledged the significant barriers to effective cancer treatment in Zimbabwe, including delayed detection, limited access to healthcare facilities, and inadequate palliative care services.

Mombeshora stressed the need for continued efforts to bridge these gaps and improve survival rates.

“The human cost of cancer is massive. Prognosis is usually poor due to limited access, delayed detection, insufficient treatment, and palliative care services. It is a burden that demands urgent and sustained action,” he stated.

To address these challenges, Mombeshora said the government was collaborating various partners, including The Angel of Hope Foundation, Kidzcan, Jointed Hands Welfare Organization, UNICEF, the WHO and the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe.

These partnerships have led to free cancer screening services, particularly in rural areas, where access to healthcare remains a challenge.

Beyond medical interventions, Mombeshora emphasized the importance of community engagement in the fight against cancer, noting that organizations have been working closely with traditional leaders, healthcare providers, and local communities to enhance awareness and encourage early screening and diagnosis.

The event also featured testimonies from cancer survivors, who shared their experiences to inspire and educate others about the importance of early detection and treatment.

Health professionals at the gathering conducted on-site cancer screenings and provided information on preventive measures, treatment options, and support services available to patients.

World Cancer Day remains a critical platform for reinforcing the government’s commitment to tackling the disease, strengthening healthcare systems, and promoting public awareness to reduce its impact.
