MT DARWIN — Preparations for this year’s World Teachers’ Day commemorations have gathered pace, with Government and education sector stakeholders meeting in Mt Darwin, Mashonaland Central, to finalise arrangements for the national event.
The commemorations will be held at Darwin High School on October 9 under the theme, “Standing with Teachers: Advancing Professionalism, Innovation and Quality Education for Zimbabwe’s Future.”
Chief Director for Human Resources and Discipline in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Lameck Mudyiwa, representing Permanent Secretary Moses Mhike, chaired the preparatory meeting held at the school today.
The meeting brought together representatives of teachers’ unions and education sector organisations, as well as provincial, district and ministry officials, as preparations intensify for the event, which is expected to bring together teachers, learners and delegates from across the country.
Among the organisations represented were the Federation of Education Unions in Zimbabwe (FEUZ), Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association (ZIMTA), Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ), Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (TUZ), National Association of Primary Heads (NAPH), National Association of Secondary Heads (NASH), National Association of Schools Inspectors and Directors (NASID), Teachers for Economic Development and the Education Coalition of Zimbabwe (ECOZI).
The meeting focused on key logistical and administrative requirements, including transport, accommodation, food, potable water, ablution facilities, tents and the mobilisation of resources to support the commemorations.
The organising committee also toured Darwin High School to assess the venue and identify areas requiring attention ahead of the event.
Discussions were also held with potential service providers, while arrangements for visiting delegates, teachers and pupils were considered as part of efforts to ensure the smooth hosting of the commemorations.
Mashonaland Central Provincial Director of Education Services, Dr Temba Mangwiro, was among the officials who attended the meeting.
Primary and Secondary Education Minister Professor Torerayi Moyo is expected to attend the commemorations as Guest of Honour, while Deputy Minister Angeline Gata and Permanent Secretary Mhike are also expected to be present.
The annual commemorations provide an opportunity to recognise the contribution of teachers to the country’s education system while promoting continued professional development, innovation and quality education in line with Zimbabwe’s broader education transformation agenda.
