Hwange (New Ziana) -The number of children who drop out school in the Simangani area of Hwange, Matabeleland North province is expected to go down significantly following the construction of a secondary school by non-governmental organisation, World vision.

The school is expected to greatly reduce the long distances that learners in the ward traveled to nearest schools, which saw many dropping out.

World Vision Hwange district area manager, Lovemore Nyoni said the long distances also affected performance of learners at school.

“For a long time Simangani Ward did not have a secondary school, the children would walk long distances of up to 7 km, become bush borders or just drop out of school,” he said.

The opening of Simangani Secondary School comes at a time when schools have opened after the nationwide Covid-19 induced lockdown and is a relief for most villagers.

Nyoni commended the Hwange District Council for providing the quarry which was used in the construction of the school while the local community applauded World Vision for supporting the education system in the district.

World Vision built a two classroom block, two teachers’ cottages, a toilet block as well as erected a perimeter fence around the school.
