Harare, (New Ziana) The victory by Zanu PF in the recently held by-elections in Glen View South is evidence that the ruling party continues to demonstrate strength and popularity in both rural and urban areas, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said on Wednesday.
The Zanu PF candidate Tsitsi Tawomhera secured 3 404 votes, defeating three independent candidates namely Tonderai Chakaredza who got 993 votes, George Makwangwaidze (681), and Tungamirai Madzokere (234), as well as National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) candidate Perpetua Mukanda, who managed only 77 votes.
The seat, which had been under opposition control since 2000, fell
vacant following the death of Grandmore Hakata of the Citizens Coalition
Change (CCC).
Speaking at the 383rd ordinary session of the Zanu PF politburo, President Mnangagwa said the new membership boom that the party is realising, which is a welcome development, is due to its people-centred policies.
He said it is important that cadres and leaders deployed to positions and strategic national duties remain loyal, patriotic and committed to wholeheartedly serve the people.
“I congratulate Harare province as well as the Party membership and people of Glenview South Constituency, for winning the recent by-elections. Makorokoto, Amhlophe,” he said.
President Mnangagwa implored women and the youth, as well as professionals from across the socio-economic spectrum, to find a comfortable home in the party.
He said he expects that the dynamic and diversity of skills as well as competencies emerging from the composition of the party membership will enable cells, villages, branches, districts and provinces to be better equipped and more responsive to the needs of communities.
“This must ultimately accelerate the realisation of our Party objectives and Vision 2030. Collectively, united and focussed, as one people, with one common vision, let us consistently and persistently advance the interests of our nation and party,” he said.
President Mnangagwa commended the people of Zimbabwe for repeatedly demonstrating that the country will never fall to the whims and caprices of its detractors.
He said under the national flag and the eternal flame of independence and freedom, the party is ensuring that all endeavours across the various sectors of the economy, are contributing to the attainment of Vision 2030.
President Mnangagwa said his administration is facilitating the implementation of policies, projects and programs that benefit all communities and improve the quality of life of the people’s lives.
“Recently, I commissioned and handed over tipper trucks to the youth from our various provinces, under the Presidential Youth Fund. In the agriculture sector, the adoption of high technology as well as modernisation of our grain storage facilities are set to consolidate our national food security and sovereignty,” he said.
The recent commissioning of the Artificial Intelligence enabled GMB grain silos in Kwekwe, the Midlands province, will have far reaching impacts on climate change mitigation strategies.
President Mnangagwa said the country is expecting yet another bumper harvest from the 2024/25 agricultural season, and commended the growth of the national livestock herd.
He also urged farmers and stakeholders in the sector to ensure an equally successful winter wheat season.
