Harare (New Ziana) – The ruling Zanu PF party will this year receive ZW$350 million in funding from government, and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) ZW$149 million, under the Political Parties Finance Act.

The two parties qualified to receive funding from government after exceeding the five percent threshold of the total votes in the last general election.

In a government gazette announcing the disbursement of the money, Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said the total amount of money payable to political parties for 2022 was ZW$500 million.

He said the money was being paid in terms of section 3(2) of the Political Parties (Finance) Act (Chapter 2:11].

“The money shall be disbursed to political parties that qualify in terms of section 3(2) of the Act as follows: three hundred and fifty million, one hundred and fifty thousand Zimbabwean dollars (ZWL$350 150 000,00) shall be paid to the Zimbabwe African Union Patriotic Front (ZANU PF), which received 70.03 percent of the total votes cast.

“One hundred and forty-nine million, eight hundred and fifty thousand Zimbabwean dollars (ZWL$149 850 000, 00) shall be paid to the Movement for Democratic Change, which received 29.97 percent of the total votes cast,” he said.

Only the two parties qualified to receive government funding.

Government promulgated the Political Parties Finance Act after it emerged that some opposition parties were receiving funding from foreign governments and organisations as part of covert attempts at regime change.
