Harare (New Ziana) – The ruling Zanu PF party on Wednesday postponed to Friday primary elections that were due on Thursday to select candidates to represent the party in parliamentary and local government by-elections in March.

In a statement, the party did not give reasons for the postponement.

“Provinces are advised that primary elections for both House of National Assembly and Local Authorities have been postponed to take place on Friday 21 January 2021.

“The Party has deployed Politburo, Central Committee, National Elections Commissioners and Secretariat from Party Headquarters to take overall charge of the conduct of both the House of National Assembly and Local Authority primaries. Provincial Leadership should take instruction and guidance from the Politburo Members deployed to their respective Provinces,” it said.

It said Central Committee members will be presiding officers in the races for parliamentary constituencies, while provincial executives will provide polling officers, including for the local government primaries.

The by – elections will be held on March 26 in dozens of parliamentary constituencies and local government jurisdictions countywide to replace office holders who either died, or were recalled by their parties or re-assigned.
