Harare (New Ziana) – The ruling Zanu PF party has begun amending its constitution primarily to bring it in sync with the aspirations of the new dispensation and the national constitution, the party’s Legal Affairs department has said.

The department, headed by Munyaradzi Mangwana, said while other amendments were being formulated some had already been incorporated.

“The legal department is currently engrossed in the process of reviewing the party constitution with a view of bringing the constitution in conformity with the aspirations of the new dispensation,” it said in a Central Committee report tabled before the just ended Zanu PF annual National People’s Conference.

“In addition, the constitutional review is motivated by the need to modernise the constitution and to bring it to be in conformity with the national constitution.”

Some of the amendments that have already been introduced include re-instating the District Co-ordinating Committees (DCCs) that had been disbanded a few years ago at the height of factionalism within the party.

The re-introduction of the DCCs is meant to fill the void that existed between the provincial structures and lower structures.

So far, DCC elections have been held in Harare and Bulawayo provinces, with the rest of the country to hold theirs soon.

“The new DCCs have been enlarged to mirror the provincial structure serve to say that there are no deputies to these positions,” the department said.

“Another major addition to the party constitution is the creation of the league of the veterans of the liberation struggle. Effectively this marks the creation of a third wing of the party after the women’s league and youth league.”

It added; “The intention is to undertake a wholesome review of the party constitution over and above the above mentioned changes.”

The Legal Affairs department said it had prepared a questionnaire that would be circulated across all provinces to gather input from members concerning other proposed amendments.

“It is pleasing to note that the proposal for a constitutional review was endorsed by the Politburo, as soon as practicable the questionnaire will be circulated to provinces for responses,” it said.
