Gweru (New Ziana) – The Midlands provincial leadership of the ruling Zanu PF party has stepped up campaigns for next month’s parliamentary and local government by-elections in the region.

This followed the launch of presidential star rallies by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Epworth on Saturday.

Midlands Province will hold several by-elections to replace incumbents who either died or were recalled from parliament or local government by their parties.

Zanu PF Midlands chairman Larry Mavima, who is also provincial minister, was in Mkoba at the weekend drumming up support for the party’s candidate in a parliamentary by-election.

He emphasised party unity, and implored the Mkoba community to vote for Zanu PF, which had initiated and carried out many development projects.

“The President has promised projects and this needs engagement of all of us so let’s participate and reunite and vote for our candidate here Cde William Gondo for the President’s efforts to be realised,” he said.

Former Midlands ruling party provincial chairman, Daniel Mackenzie Ncube, said voting for Zanu-PF would help reverse the plunder of urban council resources by the opposition.

“We need to bring water to the people, repair roads and clear the drainage system which is in a sorry state,” he said.

“We are here as Zanu PF to solve those problems that have been brought by MDC led council. We are here to rebuild infrastructure that has been neglected by the MDC. We want to correct all errors.”

Party provincial spokesman, Victor Maride, called for unity in Zanu PF after the divisive primary elections.

“All those who participated during the primary elections should come and campaign for Zanu PF. We are Zanu PF and we should be united because division makes us fall. Let us vote for Zanu PF and our candidate cde Gondo,” he said.

The party donated an electricity transformer to Mkoba, which had gone for months without power.

It also handed over a borehole in Mambo suburb.

The party’s candidate, Gondo is a well known businessman in the Mkoba constituency, who runs colleges there.

As part of his campaign, he has rehabilitated roads in the constituency and donated food to the under-privileged.

He has also offered scholarships to children unable to afford fees.
