Harare, (New Ziana) – The ruling Zanu PF party will not interfere with the remaining processes related to the Constitutional Amendment Number 3 Bill (CAB3), but let Parliament and the judiciary handle the matter according to established procedures, a senior official has said.
Speaking at a press conference held at the party headquarters on Monday, Zanu PF national spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa said the party is confident the Bill will receive Parliamentary approval, citing what he described as strong support during the public consultation phase.
The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs recently completed the review of submissions gathered during a 90-day nationwide consultation exercise on the proposed Constitutional amendment.
Contributions were received through hand-delivered submissions to Parliament, electronic mail, and public hearings conducted across the country between March 31 and April 2 this year, allowing citizens and stakeholders to express their views on the Bill.
“As Zanu PF, we will not interfere with other processes of CAB3. We will leave everything to Parliament and the judiciary. These are the organs that will oversee the remaining processes,” said Mutsvangwa.
“During the consultation process on the Bill, there was overwhelming support for it and that also showed that people have strong support for President Mnangagwa. Now, it is the duty of our party members to align their ambitions with the Constitution, rules and prevailing political sentiment within Zanu PF, as Parliament prepares to debate CAB3,” he added.
The Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Ziyambi Ziyambi, is expected to initiate the formal legislative process for CAB3 by presenting the Bill for its First Reading in the National Assembly on Tuesday.
Mutsvangwa reiterated that President Emmerson Mnangagwa continues to enjoy broad support within the ruling party and urged members aspiring for higher office to remain patient while the party focuses on its current leadership agenda.
“It is normal and legitimate for people to have ambitions in politics, but those who are eyeing higher office should hold on for now, because President Mnangagwa has overwhelming support across party structures in all provinces,” he said.
He also encouraged party members to place unity above personal ambitions, warning that internal divisions could weaken its effectiveness and distract it from its developmental objectives.
“Sideshows are not good for the party as they sow seeds of disunity. We want to remain a united party so that we keep developing our nation,” he said.
