Harare (New Ziana) -The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has invited all political parties intending to contest the August 23 national harmonised elections to provide details of officials who will be authorized to endorse the nomination of their candidates for the forthcoming harmonised elections.
In a public notice, chief elections officer Utoile Silaigwana said each political part is required to provide to the ZEC headquarters, names of at least three national office-bearers, any two of whom will be authorized to sign for its candidates in terms of Section 46 of the Electoral Act in any province that the political party will be contesting for the Senatorial, National Assembly and the provincial council party lists.
The political parties are also required to provide at least three provincial office bearers to the Provincial Elections Officer in each province with any two of the members authorized to sign candidates nomination papers in terms of Section 46 in respect of councillors in wards in the province.
“In terms of Section 38A (4) of the Electoral Act, a political party that provides the names of office bearers in accordance with the section will have the privilege of being entitled to nominate substitute candidates for any candidates who have died or withdrawn before polling day in accordance with Section 50A of the Act; and appoint roving party elections candidates in accordance with Section 93A of the Act,” read the notice.
ZEC advised all political parties to download the list of Designated Party Office Bearers form from its website or collect them from any of its offices around the country.
The invitation by ZEC could leave Citizens Coalition for Change leader Nelson Chamisa in a quandary as his outfit does not have substantive office bearers and he has indicated that he would approve all the candidates nominated to represent the party.
