Harare, (New Ziana) – Zimbabwe on Tuesday recorded 241 new Covid-19 cases, its highest new daily tally in over four months, as infections continue to rise amid fears of a third wave.

The country last recorded over 200 cases in a day on February 4 when it had just experienced a second wave of the outbreak.

Government last Saturday re-introduced stricter Covid-19 protocols, which included a ban on gatherings amid concerns that there was complacency by the public, resulting in the resurgence in cases.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care, in its daily update on the pandemic, said it had classified the town of Mt Darwin as a “hotspot.”

This brings to six, the number of areas classified as hotspots including Kariba, Karoi, Kwekwe, Masvingo and Bulawayo, with the first three towns having been put under localised lockdowns.

Since March 2020, the country has recorded 40 318 cases and 1 637 deaths.

A vaccination drive launched mid-February, has to date seen 694 730 people having received the first dose while 418 748 have received the second dose as of June 15.
