Harare, (New Ziana) –Zimbabwe joined the rest of the world on Friday in observing Global Money Week with a focus on promoting financial literacy as well as women and youth empowerment.
Officiating at the national event, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Harare Metropolitan province Charles Tawengwa highlighted the significance of financial empowerment for women and youth.
“We have a number of women and youth led SMEs (small and medium-scale enterprises). They are innovators, the caregivers and the leaders of tomorrow. Yet too often, they face systematic barriers that limit their access to financial resources, education and opportunities,” he said.
“This year’s Global Money Week challenges us to rethink these barriers and to create pathways for women and youths to thrive.”
Global Money Week (GMW) is an annual global celebration aimed at promoting financial literacy, inclusion and empowerment among individuals, particularly those in underserved communities.
There have been various activities around the world between March 17 and 23 March in observance of the Global Money Week 2025.
Tawengwa emphasized the need to challenge societal norms and pressures that lead to poor financial decisions.
“Financial independence begins with the ability to think critically, to resist impulsive decisions, and to plan wisely for the future,” he added.
The theme ‘Think before you follow’ is particularly relevant for women and youth.
In a world where social pressures and trends can often dictate financial behaviour, it is crucial to pause, reflect and make decisions that align with our long term goals.”
Lenderspark Finance, a microfinance organization, hosted the event in partnership with Pamumvuri PVO, a private voluntary organization working in the areas of mental health, drug and substance use, suicide prevention, and social entrepreneurship.
The event brought together over 200 community representatives, government officials, and financial service providers to promote financial literacy, enhance access to credit, and empower women entrepreneurs.
