    Zim Covid-19 cases jump to 766

    Harare (New Ziana)- Zimbabwe on Wednesday recorded 766 new Covid-19 cases, its highest new daily tally in over four months, as infections continue to rise amid fears of a third wave.

    Government recently re-introduced stricter Covid-19 protocols, which included a ban on gatherings amid concerns that there was complacency by the public, resulting in the resurgence in cases.

    The Ministry of Health and Child Care, in its daily update on the pandemic, said the seven- day rolling average for new cases rose to 417 from 342 on Wednesday.

    “766 New Cases (765 Local and 1 returnee from Tanzania) and 1 Death reported today (Wednesday). 31 of the 96 cases reported by Mash Central occurred between 17 and 21 June and had not been reported,” it said.

    The Ministry added: “Kariba(40), Karoi(54),Chinhoyi(24)&Kwekwe(28 remain under localised lockdowns.

    “Chibara(18),Doro(18),Nyangoma(20),Chidamoyo(15),Kazangare(16)(Mash west) , Chiredzi(32)Masvingo Province ,Marondera(32)(Mash East),Nkulumane(15), Emakhandeni (29) and Northern Suburbs(31)(Bulawayo), have been classified as hotspots.”

    Since March 2020, the country has recorded 43 480 cases and 1692 deaths.

    Zimbabwe’s vaccination programme launched mid-February, has to date seen 715 056 people having received the first dose while 451 793 have received the second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.
