Harare, (New Ziana)–Zimbabwe’s Covid-19 deaths reached 70 after one more person succumbed to the disease on Sunday, as confirmed infections continued on a strong spike and are now 79 cases shy of 4 000, the Ministry of Health and Child Care has said.

A 93-year old lady from the Midlands province died on Sunday on a day on which 262 new cases were recorded, to take the tally of confirmed cases to 3 921.

“Today we regret to report one death at a facility level in the Midlands province,” the Ministry said.

“The death is of a female aged 93 who was admitted into hospital on the 23rd of July 2020 and passed on early this (Sunday) morning.”

Five recoveries were also recorded, to take the total of those who have recovered to 1 016.

On Saturday, the country recorded its biggest jump ever in new cases in a single day when it registered 490 cases.

The huge jump in Covid-19 cases is despite a nationwide lockdown and stringent regulations aimed at curtailing movement and minimising contact between people.

The disease has invaded all aspects of the Zimbabwean life from communities to companies, which have been forced to scale down operations.
