Harare, (New Ziana) – Zimbabwe on Wednesday reported 18 new Covid-19 deaths, taking the country’s overall death toll to 122, the Ministry of Health and Child Care said.

The deaths, most of which were recorded between Thursday and Tuesday last week, were mostly discovered at post-mortem stage, the authorities said.

While the death toll increased, cases of infection also surged with 75 new cases recorded on Wednesday taking the total of confirmed cases to 4 893.

“As of 12 August, Zimbabwe has now recorded 4 893 cases and 122 deaths,” the health ministry said.

At least 76 new recoveries were also recorded on the same day.

Data released by the authorities show that Harare, the epi-centre of the disease, not only has the highest cases of infection but also has the least number of recoveries compared to all the provinces.

The City has recorded 1 884 cumulative cases of which 1 737 are active and a meagre 76 recoveries, while Bulawayo, with the second highest number of infections at 1 150 cases, had to date recorded 706 recoveries.

Zimbabwe has been under different levels of lockdown since the end of March which are aimed at curtailing spread of the disease.

New infections however remain on a rampage owing largely to people failing to observe set regulations, experts have said.
