Zim expects 2.5 million Sinovac vaccines from China

Harare (New Ziana)- Zimbabwe expects to receive 2.5 million COVID-19 vaccines from China by the end of this month as it seeks to boost its nationwide vaccination drive, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa has said.

She said of the 2, 5 million doses, the country expects 500 000 shots this week.

“On procurement of COVID-19 vaccines, Cabinet is pleased to report that arrangements are currently in progress to procure 2 million doses of Sinovac vaccines from China.

“These are expected in the country by end of month. Furthermore, 500 000 doses of vaccines are expected to be delivered this Saturday 26th June, 2021,” she said.

Zimbabwe authorised Sinovac, Sinopharm, Sputnik V and Covaxin Covid-19 vaccines for emergency use.

Mutsvangwa said government would embark on intensive vaccination at the country’s entry points.

“The nation is advised that the next priority areas of vaccination are the remaining border posts, especially Forbes,Chirundu and Kariba, current hotspots, tobacco auction floors and people’s markets such as Renkini in Bulawayo, Mbare Musika in Harare and Sakubva in Mutare.

“The Grain Marketing Board staff and COTTCO staff as well as the Hwange population will also be included in the vaccination programme,” she said.

As at 22 June, 2021, at least 706 158 had been vaccinated with the first dose while those who received the second Covid-19 dose was 440 220.
