Harare, (New Ziana) -The Zimbabwe government has so far distributed 90 percent of the total grain to food insecure households as its drought mitigation program proves to be a success, a Cabinet Minister said on Tuesday.
The program aims to provide essential support to vulnerable populations struggling to meet their food and non-food needs.
Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere told the media that Cabinet considered and noted the report on the Food Deficit Mitigation Program which his Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare counterpart Edgar Moyo presented, which showed that the government distributed the majority of the food required by citizens.
“The third Blitz in terms of Food Distribution commenced on the 1st of November last year and ended on the 31st January this year, with deserving people having received assistance.
“The Government of Zimbabwe has distributed over 90 percent of the total grain to food insecure and vulnerable households while Development Partners distributed 10 percent,” he said.
Dr Muswere said the fourth Blitz Food Distribution phase commenced on 1st February and is expected to end on 31st March, 2025.
The food distribution program, alongside the Urban Cash Transfer program, is part of the government’s broader efforts to address food insecurity and support vulnerable populations, particularly in regions heavily affected by the El Niño-induced drought.
Meanwhile, the government will undertake the First Round Crop Assessment to determine the likely harvest amid indications of a positive outcome considering the good rains the country has been receiving.
