TEAM Zimbabwe has qualified for the Continental Stage on the road to World Youth and Junior Championship after making history at the International Handball Federation Trophy Zone 6 Games that ended in Harare, over the weekend.
Overally, Zimbabwe finished first in the Juniors (U20) and second in the Youth (U18) tournament held from October 17 to 23.
Zimbabwe Handball Federation national board Secretary General, Edson Chirowodza was elated by the team’s performance after the junior boys team scooped gold while the youth boys team settled for silver.
This resulted in the teams booking a ticket for the Continental Stage ahead of the World Youth and Junior Championship.
“Congratulations to Team Zimbabwe for a splendid performance during IHF Trophy Zone 6 Games. History has been made! Great event and thumbs up to Local Organizing Committee members and all the volunteers,” said Chirowodza, who is also Secretary General of the Zone 6 of Southern Africa.
On their way to the final, Zimbabwe Under 18 boys team under coach Alan Mandeya, outclassed bronze winners Malawi, Lesotho and Eswatini before losing to eventual winners – Zambia.
The youth side won three of the four matches they played in a round-robin format to win a silver medal.
