Harare, (New Ziana) -Zimbabwe is developing a communication satellite with plans already underway to seek partnerships to achieve this, a Cabinet Minister has said.
Addressing the media after a closed door meeting with Starlink executives at her offices in the capital, Information Communication and Courier Services Minister Tatenda Mavetera said the visitors gave her assurances that they will come in handy to assist in connecting the
whole country.
“We also had conversations around satellite manufacturing, Zimbabwe is in the plan of coming up with a communication satellite and we believe that we need partners to achieve this, and they have assured us that they have a way they can to connect us with the people who are already in this field,” she said.
She said they had also been assured of a competitive package for institutions such as schools and clinics with the ultimate goal being for Starlink to bridge the rural urban digital divide.
Mavetera expressed confidence that the digitalisation program being rolled out throughout the country with support from President Emmerson Mnangagwa whose vision for the country to attain an upper middle income status by 2030 through digitalisation will be successful.
“So having Starlink on board is very important for us as a country because definitely where there is no connection, we know very well the solution is Starlink,” she said.
